State of the art websites - portals.

Postby dpirila » Tue Mar 31, 2009 5:17 pm

I doubt most people are up on what a portal is. We'll try to explain it. A portal is a new state-of-the-art website, that allows you, the customer, to login and make changes anytime you like, without having to be a technie and webmaster. A webmaster can do the basic setups and connect your website name, emails, basic website, and online tools to make this work for you.

Basic terms to know when looking at websites/portals:
Domain name - your website name - http://www.yoursite.com
Hosting - the internet server that has your code on it and web surfers go for your website.

The webmaster connects your website to the internet server, designs and builds your site, uploads it to the server, and teachs you how to make changes to your site. You login and make changes, when you click to update the site, it's live to the world.

That's basically what a portal is.

Most of the old websites required you buy tools, like FrontPage, and learn to code your own website, and then you still needed to learn to upload the changes, connect your name to the website, etc. This all costs you lots of time and money, and do you really want to be a webmaster? Or do you really want to remain the expert in your business and be able to just keep the information on your website in line with your business, without having to wait on a webmaster to make the changes for you?

One last step, but very important thought, is to tune your site for the search engines. Most webmasters don't spend enough time on this or really know it, but designing this into your site is very important. There are no guarantees in placement, but building your site with the right codes, that match your domain name and the contents of your website, and you should be in the top pages of the search engines. If not, you need to talk to someone for some help.

If people don't find you online, then your website is basically just an extension of your business card.

Build your portal correctly and you can make changes all you want and it will bring you new customers and contacts. I think that is what all businesses, clubs, and people want.
